Born and bred in The Salvation Army in England, Ian Jones naturally learned to play an instrument at an early age. At age 12 he transferred from cornet to euphonium, an instrument he continues to play today. His time in England saw him as a member of the South London Youth Band and Upper Norwood Band.

In 1973 Ian and his family emigrated to Melbourne where he attended the Camberwell Corps and continued to play euphonium. Subsequently he was appointed as the Musical Director of Hawthorn and Waverley Temple bands.

A change of employment saw Ian extend his musical career by joining Melbourne’s Band of the Third Military District. He was also appointed to the Melbourne Staff Band – a position he held for nearly 20 years. His time with the renowned MSB provided him with many opportunities to travel overseas.

Ian’s composition technique evolved from a need to compose and arrange music for the many students and youth bands he had become involved with. This prompted further studies in brass arranging. He now predominately arranges for trombones quartets and sextets for Cory Band's Principal Trombone Brett Baker. Ian now lives in Perth and currently plays euphonium in the Perth Fortress band.
